Your triggers are rotting and you don't know it
You built a trigger system. Maybe you designed it deliberately, following the earlier lessons in this phase. Maybe it accumulated organically — alarms, sticky notes, habit stacks, calendar blocks, environmental cues. Either way, you have a collection of mechanisms designed to activate specific behaviors at specific moments.
Here is what you almost certainly have not done: gone back to check whether any of them still work.
Triggers degrade. They degrade silently, gradually, and in ways that feel like personal failure rather than infrastructure failure. The alarm you set to prompt a daily review now gets swiped away reflexively. The visual cue on your desk got buried under papers three weeks ago. The habit stack you anchored to your morning coffee dissolved when you started intermittent fasting and dropped the coffee. The context changed. The trigger didn't. And because you never audited, you interpreted the breakdown as a discipline problem rather than a design problem.
This is the trigger audit: a periodic, systematic review of every trigger in your behavioral infrastructure to determine which are still firing, which are stale, which need recalibration, and which should be retired entirely.
Why triggers decay: the context-dependency problem
Wendy Wood's research on habit formation at the University of Southern California established one of the most important findings in behavioral science: habits are fundamentally context-dependent. Once formed, context cues automatically activate the habit representation in memory. But the corollary is equally important — when the context changes, the trigger loses its power. A degraded behavioral trigger simply stops firing, and you experience the absence as vague malaise, lost momentum, or "falling off the wagon." Without a periodic audit, you have no mechanism to distinguish between a motivation problem and a trigger infrastructure problem.
The GTD precedent: periodic review as a core system requirement
David Allen understood this decades ago when he designed the Weekly Review as the centerpiece of Getting Things Done. Allen called the Weekly Review "the critical success factor" in making the entire GTD methodology work. Not the capture step. Not the organize step. The review step — the one most people skip.
The GTD Weekly Review has three phases: Get Clear (process all inputs), Get Current (review all active projects and next actions), and Get Creative (activate dormant projects and ideas). Allen's recommendation is 60 to 90 minutes per week. The entire point is that any productivity system left unreviewed drifts out of alignment with reality. Tasks become stale. Projects lose relevance. Next actions reference contexts that no longer exist. The system doesn't crash — it rusts (Allen, 2001).
Your trigger system has the same failure mode. Every trigger was designed for a specific context, a specific schedule, a specific set of priorities. None of those are static. Without periodic review, your triggers accumulate like unread emails — technically present, functionally useless, and collectively dragging on your confidence in the system.
The four questions of the trigger audit
A trigger audit does not require complex tooling. It requires answering four questions about every trigger in your system, honestly and with data:
1. Is this trigger still firing?
Some triggers stop activating entirely. The visual cue you placed on your desk is now behind a stack of books. The alarm you set for 6 AM is irrelevant because you switched to a 7 AM wake-up. The habit stack anchored to "after I pour my coffee" broke when you changed your morning routine. A trigger that does not fire is not a trigger. It is a fossil.
2. When it fires, do I respond?
A trigger can fire reliably and still fail — if you've learned to ignore it. This is the behavioral equivalent of alert fatigue, a phenomenon well-documented in DevOps and site reliability engineering. Atlassian's research on alert fatigue found that when fewer than 10% of monitoring alerts are actionable, engineers begin ignoring all alerts indiscriminately. 3. Is the behavior this trigger serves still relevant?

Every irrelevant trigger that remains in your system makes every relevant trigger slightly less effective.
4. Is the calibration still correct?

The environmental cue should be more prominent because you've moved to a noisier workspace. The time-based trigger should shift by an hour because your energy patterns changed with the season. Calibration drift is the subtlest form of trigger degradation because the trigger still appears to be working — just not well.
The AI parallel: monitoring review and alert tuning
If you work in software engineering, you already understand this concept — you just haven't applied it to yourself.
Production monitoring systems require regular audit cycles. A 2025 study by Catchpoint found that nearly 70% of site reliability engineers reported that untuned alert systems contributed to burnout and attrition. The solution in every mature engineering organization is the same: periodic alert review. Teams audit their monitoring dashboards quarterly or after significant infrastructure changes. They evaluate each alert against the same questions you should ask of your triggers: Is it still firing? Is it actionable when it fires? Is the underlying condition still relevant? Is the threshold calibrated correctly?
The ML operations world takes this even further. Your trigger system has the same architecture. Each trigger is a model — a hypothesis that a specific cue will reliably produce a specific behavior. Environmental changes are your data drift. Priority changes are your concept drift. Without periodic review, your behavioral models degrade silently, and you blame the equivalent of "the algorithm" — your own willpower — rather than recognizing a maintainable infrastructure problem.
What the audit looks like in practice
The trigger audit is a structured review, not a vague reflection. Here is a concrete protocol:
Inventory. List every trigger you currently rely on. Include alarms, calendar blocks, environmental cues, habit stacks, digital notifications, social commitments, and any other mechanism designed to prompt a specific behavior. Most people have between 15 and 40 active triggers. If your list has fewer than 10, you are probably missing some — check your phone's notification settings, your calendar's recurring events, and any physical cues in your workspace.
Assess. For each trigger, record: (a) the intended behavior, (b) how many times it fired in the last two weeks, (c) how many times you actually executed the behavior when it fired, and (d) whether the context that made this trigger effective is still intact. This produces a simple hit rate: fires versus executions.
Classify. Based on the assessment, mark each trigger as one of four statuses:
- Active — firing regularly, high hit rate, context intact. Keep as-is.
- Stale — not firing, or firing into a context that no longer exists. Candidate for retirement.
- Fatigued — firing but consistently ignored. Needs redesign — different modality, different timing, or reduced frequency.
- Miscalibrated — firing and sometimes effective, but sensitivity is off. Needs adjustment — change the threshold, timing, or prominence.
Act. Retire stale triggers immediately. Redesign fatigued ones within the week. Adjust miscalibrated ones on the spot. Document what changed and why — this creates an audit trail that makes future reviews faster.
Frequency: how often to audit
Atul Gawande's research on checklists in high-stakes environments — documented in The Checklist Manifesto (2009) — demonstrated that the value of periodic review scales with system complexity and consequence. Simple systems can tolerate longer review intervals. Complex systems with high stakes require more frequent review.
For most people, a weekly trigger audit integrated into an existing weekly review (a la GTD) is the right cadence during the first month of practice. This is when you are building the audit habit itself and learning what your triggers actually do versus what you think they do. After the first month, bi-weekly or monthly is usually sufficient for stable systems. Any time you experience a major context change — new job, new schedule, new environment, new set of priorities — do an immediate off-cycle audit. Context changes are the primary cause of trigger degradation, and waiting for the scheduled review means running on degraded infrastructure in the meantime.
The meta-trigger problem
There is an obvious recursion here: the trigger audit is itself a behavior that requires a trigger. If you do not build a reliable trigger for the audit, the audit will not happen, and your triggers will degrade unreviewed.
This is not a paradox. It is a design constraint. The audit trigger must be one of the most robust triggers in your entire system — anchored to a reliable context, resistant to environmental change, and reinforced by immediate visible value. Attaching it to an existing weekly review practice is the most reliable approach because the review context already exists and the audit adds minutes, not hours. If you do not have a weekly review practice, build one. The trigger audit alone justifies the investment.
David Allen's observation applies directly: when the weekly review happens at the same time, in the same place, with the same steps, you don't waste energy wondering whether to do it or how. The routine itself becomes the trigger for the focused mindset you need. The trigger audit inherits this stability when embedded within an established review ritual.
The compounding returns of maintenance
A 2025 Psychology Today review of habit tracking research found that individuals who evolved their tracking and review systems as habits matured reported 34% higher satisfaction with their progress than those who set systems once and left them static. The mechanism is straightforward: review creates a feedback loop. You see what is working, amplify it. You see what is failing, fix it.
