Pre-define information boundary overrides — real-time…

Define explicit override conditions for information boundaries in advance (on-call status, time-sensitive requests from key people) rather than negotiating exceptions in the moment when anxiety will generate spurious justifications.

When This Fires

Common Failure Mode

Real-time exception negotiation: "I know my email window isn't until 3 PM, but this feels urgent — I should check." In the moment, anxiety makes every unchecked message feel urgent. Without pre-defined override conditions, you evaluate each impulse individually, and anxiety wins most evaluations. With pre-defined conditions, the evaluation is binary: "Does this match a pre-defined override? No → the boundary holds."

The Protocol

(1) When establishing information boundaries (Convert infinite information activities into finite ones…), simultaneously define override conditions. (2) Override conditions should be: Specific (not "if it seems important" but "if I'm on-call or a VIP contact sends a message marked urgent"), Pre-defined (written during calm planning, not negotiated during boundary enforcement), Few (3-5 maximum — more conditions means the boundary is effectively eliminated). (3) Write the override conditions alongside the boundary itself. They're part of the boundary design, not afterthoughts. (4) When the urge to check outside the window arises → consult the override list. Match? Override is legitimate. No match? The urge is anxiety, not emergency. Hold the boundary. (5) After any override, log it: was the override genuinely warranted? If most overrides turn out to be unnecessary → tighten the conditions. If overrides are consistently warranted → the boundary may need redesign rather than more exceptions.
