How to ThinkIn the Age of AI

Make the threshold moment clean and undeniable — close…

Position the threshold moment as a clean, crisp, undeniable transition between preparation and execution (closing door, writing first word, speaking intention aloud) to eliminate drift and create a liminal passage that marks entry into committed time.

When This Fires

Common Failure Mode

Gradual drift-in: you sit at the desk, open the laptop, check email "quickly," glance at the document, read a few lines, sort of start editing... There's no threshold moment. You never fully entered committed mode because you never crossed a clean transition. Compare: close the door, put phone in drawer, say "I am now writing" — and write the first sentence. Clear threshold, immediate engagement.

The Protocol

(1) For each ritualized commitment, define the threshold moment: what specific, undeniable physical action marks entry into execution? (2) The action must be: Physical (involves your body, not just your mind), Binary (done or not done — no gradient), Immediately preceding execution (the next thing after the threshold IS the committed work). (3) Examples: closing the office door, putting phone in another room, writing the first sentence, pressing "record," saying your intention aloud. (4) The threshold action is the last step of preparation and the first step of execution — it belongs to both and bridges the gap between them. (5) Once the threshold is crossed, you are in committed time. No checking, no "just one quick thing." The threshold marked the transition; honor it.
