Test habit automaticity by effort level, not frequency…

Verify habit automaticity by checking whether the behavior fires from context cues with minimal conscious effort rather than checking execution frequency, because consistency maintained through willpower is not delegation—true automaticity means the cue triggers the routine without deliberation.

When This Fires

  • When evaluating whether a habit has been successfully installed
  • When a habit that "works" feels effortful — it may be willpower-maintained rather than automatic
  • When deciding whether to add another habit to the stack (Automate each habit link before adding the next — stacking…) — only stack on automated links
  • During agent system reviews when assessing which behavioral agents have achieved true delegation

Common Failure Mode

Using frequency as the automaticity metric: "I've done this every day for 30 days — it's a habit!" Maybe — or maybe you've been forcing it for 30 days and it still requires deliberate effort each time. Lally et al.'s research shows habit formation takes 18-254 days, with huge individual variation. 30 days of forced compliance doesn't guarantee automaticity.

The Protocol

(1) For a habit you want to verify, ask: "When the cue occurs, does the behavior start before I've consciously decided to do it?" If yes → the habit is automatic. Genuine delegation has occurred. (2) If you still deliberate each time ("Do I want to do this? Should I skip today?") → the behavior is willpower-maintained. The delegation is incomplete. (3) For incomplete delegations: continue environmental support (Add temporary scaffolding during the first 2-4 weeks…), maintain the minimal viable version (Start every new agent at under two minutes with zero…), and assess again in 2-4 weeks. (4) Don't add another link to the chain (Automate each habit link before adding the next — stacking…) until the current link passes the automaticity test. (5) The ultimate test: does the behavior survive a bad day (tired, stressed, disrupted routine) without deliberate effort? If yes → truly automatic.
