Context Engineering for Humans
The AI field discovered in 2025 what cognitive science has known for decades: the bottleneck is not the prompt, it is the context. Context engineering is usually taught for AI systems — this path teaches it for you. Context determines meaning; written context prevents misinterpretation; identifiers, atoms, and explicit schemas are what let any intelligence — yours or a machine's — pick up your thinking cold and use it correctly. Master the human half and every AI interaction improves.
After completing this path you will engineer context deliberately: recognize which context you are in and load it on purpose, externalize the assumptions and decisions that machines and colleagues silently need, structure information so it survives handoff (identifiers, atomic units, explicit relationships), and manage the switching costs that fragment thinking. Your AI sessions start warm and your writing stops being misread.Start This Path

The Prompt Was Never the Problem
Prompt engineering optimizes the question. Context engineering builds the world the question lives in. This path teaches the discipline at the human layer — because the person who can hand any collaborator, human or AI, exactly the context they need is the person whose leverage compounds.
Phase 1: Context Determines Meaning (Lessons 1-4)
The same words mean different things in different contexts; time shifts meaning; digital communication collapses contexts that used to stay separate. You learn to see context as a first-class object.
Phase 2: Externalize What You Silently Know (Lessons 5-8)
Internal monologue is lossy compression. Capturing context with content, externalizing assumptions, and externalizing decisions turns the knowledge in your head into context an AI can operate on.
Phase 3: Structure for Handoff (Lessons 9-12)
Unique identifiers, context attached to the atom, schemas made explicit — and why agents (including AI agents) operate on schemas. This is the structure that makes your corpus machine-usable.
Phase 4: Load, Switch, Compound (Lessons 13-16)
Context switching requires context loading and has hidden costs. Personal knowledge graphs plus AI show what compounding context looks like when relationships are explicit instead of assumed.
Where This Leads
Next in this arc: Think With AI — with context handled, the collaboration turns to judgment itself.

Context determines meaning
Information has no inherent meaning. Meaning is constructed at the intersection of information and context. Change the context, and the same data, sentence, or signal means something entirely different.
- 2L-0164
Written context prevents misinterpretation
Recording the context of a decision prevents future confusion about why you made it. Without a written record of the forces, constraints, and reasoning at the moment of choice, your future self — and everyone else — will reconstruct a fiction and call it memory.
- 3L-0166
Temporal context shifts meaning
What was true in one time period may not be true in another — always note the when.
- 4L-0169
Context collapse in digital communication
Online messages strip context that face-to-face communication provides automatically.
- 5L-0012
Internal monologue is lossy compression
Your inner voice summarizes and distorts more than it faithfully represents. What you hear in your head is a compressed fragment of what you actually think — stripped of nuance, missing subjects, and riddled with systematic distortions you cannot detect from inside.
- 6L-0047
Capture context not just content
Record why an idea matters and what triggered it not just the idea itself.
- 7L-0186
Externalize your assumptions
Assumptions you never write down are assumptions you never question. Every plan, decision, and belief rests on invisible premises — and the invisible ones are the ones that destroy you.
- 8L-0182
Externalize decisions not just information
The most valuable thing to capture is why you chose what you chose. Decisions decay faster than facts — and unlike facts, they cannot be reconstructed after the outcome is known.
- 9L-0022
Unique identifiers prevent confusion
Every distinct idea needs a unique, stable address — without one, you cannot reference it, link to it, or build on it reliably.
- 10L-0030
Context belongs with the atom
An atomic note should carry enough context to be understood without its original source.
- 11L-0414
Agents operate on schemas
Every agent embeds assumptions about the world — the schema it uses must be accurate.
- 12L-0201
A schema is a mental model made explicit
A schema is a mental model that has been externalized, named, and structured so it can be examined, tested, and improved — turning invisible cognitive habit into visible cognitive infrastructure.
- 13L-0163
Context switching requires context loading
When you change contexts you must deliberately load the relevant frame of reference.
- 14L-0064
Context switching has a hidden cost
Every time you switch tasks, you pay a recovery tax — between 10 and 25 minutes of degraded cognition while your brain reloads the previous context. This cost is invisible because you feel busy the entire time.
- 15L-0359
Personal knowledge graphs and AI
A well-structured personal knowledge graph becomes an input that AI can leverage.
- 16L-0242
Explicit relationships replace assumptions
Writing down how two ideas relate prevents assuming a connection that does not exist.
