What does it mean that sovereignty and meaning?

Example: A mid-career professional spends a decade climbing a ladder chosen by her parents — law school, partner track, the right firm. She hits every milestone. She feels nothing. When she finally asks 'What would I choose if no one were watching?' the answer terrifies her because it has nothing to do with law. The meaning was never in the achievement. It was in the choosing. She had outsourced the choosing, and the meaning left with it.

Try this: Identify one significant domain of your life — career, relationships, health, creative work — where you suspect the direction was set by someone or something other than your own deliberate choice. Write down who or what set that direction, and when. Then write what you would choose if you were starting fresh, with no sunk costs and no audience. Compare the two. The gap between them is the gap between compliance and sovereignty. You do not need to change anything today. You need to see it.
