How to ThinkIn the Age of AI

Capture insights within 5 seconds — speed beats format…

Capture spontaneous insights within 5 seconds using whatever tool is immediately accessible, because signal fidelity degrades exponentially with delay and retrieval fluency drops 42% within 20 minutes.

When This Fires

  • A connection between ideas appears while walking, showering, or commuting
  • An insight surfaces during a conversation that you can't fully explore right now
  • A solution to a problem you weren't actively thinking about pops into awareness
  • Any moment where a thought feels important and novel

Common Failure Mode

Waiting to find the "right" tool. You have an insight while walking, but your phone is in your pocket and you want to capture it in Obsidian, so you walk for another 2 minutes while mentally rehearsing the thought. By the time you open the app, the associative context has degraded — you capture the headline but lose the connections. A voice memo in 3 seconds would have preserved everything.

The Protocol

When a spontaneous insight arrives: (1) Capture within 5 seconds using whatever is closest — voice memo, back of hand, nearest scrap of paper, text message to yourself. (2) Minimum viable capture: 3-7 words that preserve the core connection. Not a complete thought — a retrieval anchor. (3) Expand within 30 minutes while context is still accessible. The fragment "auth + rate limit = user trust" becomes a full note only after the 5-second capture secures the anchor. (4) Never prioritize format over speed. A messy capture beats a lost insight every time.
