How to ThinkIn the Age of AI

Map 2-5 thinking partners

Maintain a personal map of 2-5 thinking partners, documenting for each: what topics they're suited for, what topics are inappropriate due to competing interests or power dynamics, and what type of support they naturally provide.

When This Fires

  • When you need to share a reflection and aren't sure who to share it with
  • When sharing with the wrong person produced unhelpful or counterproductive feedback
  • When setting up your personal cognitive support infrastructure
  • Complements Before sharing a reflection, write 3 sentences specifying… (specify support type before sharing) with the selection of who to share with

Common Failure Mode

Default-partner routing: sharing everything with the same person regardless of topic suitability. This overloads one relationship and misses the specific strengths of others. Career reflections go to your partner (who provides emotional support when you needed strategic challenge), while relationship reflections go to your colleague (who provides analytical frameworks when you needed empathy).

The Protocol

(1) Identify 2-5 people you currently share reflections with or could. (2) For each, document three fields: Suited topics (domains where their perspective, experience, or support style adds unique value), Inappropriate topics (domains where conflicts of interest, power dynamics, or relationship boundaries make sharing counterproductive), Natural support mode (what they naturally provide — analysis, empathy, challenge, validation, perspective). (3) When you need to share a reflection, consult the map: match the topic to the person whose suited-topics and support-mode best match your current need (Before sharing a reflection, write 3 sentences specifying…). (4) Review and update the map quarterly: relationships evolve, and what was appropriate to share with someone last year may not be now. (5) If you have gaps (no partner suited for a specific topic or support type), this is information: consider developing a new thinking partnership in that area, or use AI for topics with no appropriate human partner (Share completed reflective writing with AI and ask…).
