Separate creation and editing into different calendar…

Schedule creation and editing as two separate calendar blocks with a minimum gap of thirty minutes (preferably overnight) to allow defamiliarization and enable fresh-eyes error detection.

When This Fires

  • When producing any output that requires both creation and quality review
  • When editing immediately after writing and catching fewer errors than you'd expect
  • When you need to self-edit without access to a separate reviewer
  • Complements Three sequential editing passes for high-polish outputs (three-pass editing) with the temporal separation that makes editing effective

Common Failure Mode

Write-then-immediately-edit: finishing a document and immediately "reviewing" it. The review catches obvious typos but misses structural problems, unclear arguments, and missing transitions because defamiliarization hasn't occurred. You're reading from memory, not from the page.

The Protocol

(1) When scheduling work that requires creation + editing, block two separate sessions: creation block and editing block. (2) Minimum gap: 30 minutes of different activity between the two blocks. Ideal gap: overnight. (3) During the creation block: focus entirely on generating content. Don't edit as you go. Tolerate roughness. Get the ideas down. (4) During the gap: do something completely unrelated. Let the mental model of the document fade. (5) During the editing block: read the output as if someone else wrote it. What's unclear? What's missing? What should be cut? The defamiliarized perspective reveals what the creator's perspective hid.
