How to ThinkIn the Age of AI

System-produced energy vs. willpower-demanded energy

When deciding whether energy was produced by system or demanded by willpower, audit whether sleep, exercise, meal timing, and emotional processing happened automatically or required conscious override—if override was needed, that component lacks structural implementation.

When This Fires

  • During energy system reviews when assessing whether energy management is sustainable
  • When energy management "works" but feels effortful — the effort IS the diagnostic signal
  • When evaluating which energy components need structural upgrading
  • Complements Test habit automaticity by effort level, not frequency… (automaticity verification) with the energy-system-specific application

Common Failure Mode

Confusing compliance with automaticity: "I've been sleeping well for months!" — but only because you fight the urge to stay up late every night. The sleep behavior exists, but it's willpower-maintained, which means it'll collapse under stress (Design triggers for your worst cognitive day…). Genuine automaticity means the sleep routine fires without deliberation.

The Protocol

(1) For each energy-producing behavior (sleep, exercise, nutrition, emotional processing), ask: "Did this happen automatically this week, or did I need to consciously decide/force it each time?" (2) Automatic: the trigger fired, the behavior happened, no deliberation needed. → This component is structurally implemented. It'll survive stress and depletion. (3) Override required: you had to convince yourself, fight an urge, or make a daily decision. → This component lacks structural implementation. It'll fail under stress. (4) For override-requiring components: identify the structural gap and design the automation — trigger (Agent triggers must be observable or measurable — vague…), environment (Subtract unwanted affordances before adding desired ones…), habit installation (Test habit automaticity by effort level, not frequency…-576), or pre-commitment (Design pre-commitments when calm to constrain behavior…). (5) The goal: an energy system where all four components operate automatically, producing energy without consuming willpower.
