How to ThinkIn the Age of AI

Question

What does it mean that meaning and connection?

advanced

Quick Answer

Connection to others and to something larger amplifies the meaning you can construct.

Example: You spend two years building a mobile app alone in your apartment. The technical work is satisfying, but something feels hollow. You launch it and three users send messages describing how the app helped them manage their anxiety during chemotherapy. In that moment the project acquires a weight it never had when it lived only inside your head. The code did not change. The meaning changed — because it became relational.

Try this: Identify the three activities in your current life that feel most meaningful. For each, map the relational web: Who else is involved, affected, or aware? Who do you share the experience with, even indirectly? Now identify the three activities that feel least meaningful. Map those relational webs too. Compare the density and quality of connection in each set. Where the meaning is thin, ask: What relationship — to a person, a community, or a purpose beyond yourself — could I introduce that would change the meaning I construct from this activity?
