The behavior built the identity, and the identity now produces the behavior. The loop has closed, and each revolution strengthens both sides. Six months later, peers describe her as "radically honest" — a characterization that began as a single uncomfortable conversation and compounded through the feedback loop into a settled trait.
Try this: Choose one identity you are actively building — writer, athlete, clear thinker, early riser. Draw a simple loop diagram on paper: Identity → Behavior → Evidence → Updated Identity → Behavior. Now populate the loop with your own data from the past two weeks. In the Identity position, write your current identity statement. In the Behavior position, list three to five specific actions you took that were consistent with that identity. In the Evidence position, note what you observed about yourself as a result of those actions — what did you notice, what did others reflect back, what outcomes emerged? In the Updated Identity position, write how your self-concept shifted, even slightly, as a result. Finally, note any new behaviors the updated identity generated that you would not have attempted two weeks ago.
