Why This Is a Rule
Thinking environments decay through entropy — the second law of thermodynamics applied to workspaces. Physical desks accumulate objects. Digital desktops accumulate files. Browsers accumulate tabs. Notification permissions drift. Each individual addition feels trivial; the cumulative effect degrades cognitive performance invisibly because the degradation is gradual enough that you adapt to each step.
A documented specification defines your environment's intended state: desk clear except for [items], browser with [N] pinned tabs, notifications from [sources only], phone in [location]. The weekly audit compares actual state to spec. Deviations are entropy that accumulated during the week — each one individually unnoticed but collectively significant.
Without the spec-to-actual comparison, you rely on subjective feeling: "My workspace seems fine." But you've adapted to the current state, so even a significantly degraded environment feels normal. The spec provides an objective reference that your subjective assessment cannot.

Common Failure Mode
Not having a documented spec to compare against. Without a spec, the audit becomes subjective: "Does this seem okay?" — which always produces "yes" because you've adapted. Write the spec once (what should your desk, browser, notification settings, and phone location look like during deep work?) and compare against it weekly.
The Protocol
Weekly: (1) Open your environment specification (if you don't have one, write one now — it takes 5 minutes). (2) Compare actual environment to spec across all domains: physical workspace, digital workspace, notification state, device locations. (3) For each deviation: restore to spec or deliberately update the spec if the deviation was an intentional improvement. (4) Total time: 5-10 minutes. The weekly reset prevents cumulative entropy from degrading your thinking environment.
