Why This Is a Rule
Most daily writing practices fail because they start too large: "Write 500 words every morning" or "Journal for 20 minutes." The ambitious version works for a week on motivation, then collapses because the effort exceeds what the nascent habit can sustain. The habit never reaches automaticity because it requires deliberate effort every time.
Three sentences answering one question for 90 seconds is the minimum viable externalization — small enough to never feel burdensome, short enough to fit after any anchor behavior, and structured enough (one question provides direction) to eliminate "what should I write about?" friction.
"What am I trying to figure out right now?" is the optimal starting question because it surfaces the most cognitively active concern — the thing occupying working memory — which produces immediate cognitive relief through externalization. The answer is always available (you're always trying to figure out something), always relevant, and always produces useful output.
Expansion happens only after automaticity: when the 90-second practice fires without deliberation, you can grow it to 5 minutes, then 10. Expanding before automaticity creates a larger practice that hasn't consolidated, which collapses at the first disruption.

Common Failure Mode
Expanding too quickly because the practice "feels easy." If it feels easy, that's the habit forming — don't disrupt the formation process by making it harder. The 90-second version should feel easy for 3-4 weeks before expansion. Premature expansion kills more writing habits than initial resistance.
The Protocol
(1) After your anchor behavior (Attach daily writing to an existing automatic behavior — not to willpower or clock time), write three sentences answering: "What am I trying to figure out right now?" (2) Set a 90-second timer if needed — stop when it fires, even mid-sentence. (3) Do not judge the output. Do not edit. Do not expand. Three sentences, 90 seconds, done. (4) After 3-4 weeks of consistent automatic firing (you do it without thinking about it): expand to 5 minutes. After another 3-4 weeks: 10 minutes. Each expansion consolidates before the next.
