Ask 'What would become true if I wrote this down?' — resistance reveals avoided commitments
For each thought you resist capturing, immediately ask and write down 'What would become true if I had written this down?'—usually revealing that externalization would trigger a downstream commitment chain you're avoiding.
Why This Is a Rule
Capture resistance often isn't about the thought — it's about what the thought implies. "I should write down that I'm not satisfied with this role" → if you write it down, it becomes real. If it's real, you have to decide what to do about it. If you decide, you have to act. The thought itself is harmless; the downstream commitment chain it triggers is what you're avoiding.
The diagnostic question "What would become true if I had written this down?" surfaces this hidden chain. The answer is almost never "nothing" — it's something like "I'd have to acknowledge that this project is failing" or "I'd have to have that difficult conversation" or "I'd have to reconsider a decision I've already committed to." These downstream implications are exactly why the thought has high value and exactly why you resist capturing it.
By writing the answer to the diagnostic question, you've effectively captured the thought anyway — plus its implications. The avoidance is neutralized because the externalization already happened through the side door of the diagnostic question.
When This Fires

- A thought feels "not worth writing down" despite having emotional weight
- You catch yourself rationalizing why a particular capture isn't needed
- Any moment where the act of writing something down feels threatening
Common Failure Mode
Answering the question mentally rather than in writing. "What would become true? Well, I'd have to..." — and then the internal monologue compresses and dismisses the answer. The question must be answered in writing because written answers are harder to dismiss. The externalized commitment chain persists on the page while the mental version evaporates within minutes.
The Protocol
When you resist capturing a thought: (1) Instead of fighting the resistance or giving in to it, ask: "What would become true if I had written this down?" (2) Write the answer. Not think it — write it. (3) Read the answer. It usually reveals a downstream commitment you're avoiding: a conversation, a decision, a change. (4) Now you have both the original thought (captured indirectly) and the commitment chain (captured directly). The resistance has produced more insight than a clean capture would have.
